Roy Leon Culbertson age 89, resident of Fort Scott, KS passed from this earth on July 28, 2016. He was born September 23, 1926, in Bourbon County, Kansas to Joseph Roy and Alpharetta Elizabeth (Mason) Culbertson.
On September 3, 1950 he married Shirley Joann Leist. Leon graduated from Uniontown High School in 1944. He then joined the US Navy and served 20 months in the Philippine Islands. Returning to the states, he attended Fort Scott Junior College. In 1949 he went to work as a carpenter for Maycumber Construction. In 1958 Leon struck out on his own, forming Culbertson Construction Company. Over the years he built 40 plus homes in and around Fort Scott. His last major project was to build 3 apartment buildings located on Horton which Leon and Shirley ran until retiring to the farm out by Rock Creek in 1996. Leon was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He thoroughly enjoyed anything outdoors and was most at home hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 66 years, Shirley, of the home; two daughters: Janice Hite and husband Rick of Fort Scott, Patty Magee and husband Dick of Fort Scott, two sons: Brad Culbertson and wife Carole of Lee’s Summit, MO., Tim Culbertson and wife Marianne of Fort Scott. There are 8 grandchildren: Aaron Hite and wife Amy, Wes Hite and wife Jenny, Nathan Magee and wife Kristy. Natalie Darling and husband Derrick, Nick Magee, Megan Johnson and husband Clint, Zach Culbertson and wife Brianna, and Lee Culbertson and Fiancé Brianne Albright. Additionally, there are 9 great grandchildren and one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bennie Culbertson.
Rick Hite and Rev. Steve Cole will conduct funeral services for Leon at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Fort Scott National Cemetery with Military Honors conducted at the cemetery by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Post 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Detail and the Kansas Navy Funeral Honors Detail. The family will receive friends Monday evening August 1, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
