This is one of my prized possessions, given to me by Donna several years ago before I moved from Fort Scott. It may not look like much, but it is the perfect implement for the final cooling and pulling stage of the best peanut brittle ever. You see, Donna and Sister Jude, the director of the Mercy Laboratory, used to make many, many batches of peanut brittle around Christmas time and deliver them around town and at Mercy Hospital. It truly was the best peanut brittle I have ever eaten and many others concur with this opinion. After bugging her many times for the recipe, she did finally give it to me, although, being an old family recipe of her mother's, I believe she may have been a little reluctant. So I tried to duplicate the candy based on the recipe she had provided. Needless to say, my peanut brittle was hardly edible and certainly nothing like hers. After discussing this with her several times, she said, "Well, there are a few tricks to making this. Come over to my house and I'll show you how to do it." That was one of my fondest experiences--making peanut brittle with Donna and Sister Jude. Twenty years later, I still make Donna's peanut brittle during the holidays and of course think of Sister Jude and her. Beyond that, I would often have a cup of coffee with Donna when she stopped in the hospital cafeteria after exercising at the fitness center. She had some great stories about the old times with the Sisters at the Fort Scott Convent. I still laugh when I recall some of them. Donna was gracious, faithful and had a great sense of humor. I am grateful for her friendship and her passing on how to make the best peanut brittle ever! I extend my sincere condolences to her family and friends. Woody Grantham
