Sandra Sue “Sandy” Rylander, 75, of Fort Scott, Kansas passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack Wednesday afternoon, February 14, 2018, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Sandy was born October 16, 1942, in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of the late John C. and Nettie Caroline (Townsend) Stanbro.
Sandy graduated from Uniontown High School, Uniontown, Kansas with the class of 1960. Following completion of high school, she married the love of her life, Gary Rylander, on June 4, 1961 in Fort Scott. Early in their marriage Sandy and Gary lived in Detroit, Michigan; Lebanon, Missouri; and Versailles, Kentucky before returning to Fort Scott in 1981. Later they moved to Carmel, Indiana and following Gary’s retirement in 1999 returned once more to Fort Scott.
Throughout her time in Fort Scott, Sandy left a mark on the community with her passion for history and genealogy. She was the Corresponding Secretary and primary researcher of the Old Fort Genealogical Society assisting many people with ancestral research. In addition, she was past Regent of the Molly Foster Berry Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This local chapter was on the verge of closing its doors after 100 years in Fort Scott until Sandy took over as Regent and helped to increase its membership. She enjoyed visiting and spending time with her family and was an avid animal lover, always rescuing stray cats and dogs. She was also a member of Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church.
Sandy will be remembered for her selfless qualities and true devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was greatly loved by her family and friends and will be missed by all.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 56 years; her daughters, Susan (Rylander) Hedge and her husband, Dennis Hedge, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Cheryl Rylander Huffman and her husband, Edward “Teddy” Huffman of Darien, Connecticut; a sister, Martha Murrow of Jupiter, Florida; and six grandchildren, Isabelle and Emily Hedge and Benjamin, Andrew, Nicholas, and Jane Huffman; and many other cherished relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant daughter, Kelli Sue Rylander.
Following cremation, memorial services for Sandy will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home with interment following at the Deerfield Cemetery.
